At it’s recent Board Meeting NHS Wandsworth selected St George’s Hospital Trust as its preferred organisation to take on the Wandsworth Community Services as it separates from the Primary Care Trust.
The PCT also received a detailed report of the events leading up to the voluntary liquidation of Secure Healthcare, the social enterprise providing healthcare services to inmates of Wandsworth Prison. In discussing the report, it was recognised that it was difficult to balance the financial risk of accepting a tender from an untried organisation, against the improvement in services such an organisation might achieve.

The health of people living in Wandsworth has been recognised as good in an independent review of local public services published on 9th October.
Oneplace, known formally as the Comprehensive Area Assessment , brings together the work of the Audit Commission, Ofsted, the Care Quality Commission and Her Majesty’s Inspectorates of Constabulary, Probation and Prisons to assess how well local partners such as the NHS, council, police, fire and rescue services are working together to tackle local priorities in Wandsworth.
The assessment shows that Wandsworth is performing significantly better than the England average in some key areas, including reducing smoking in pregnancy and encouraging adults to eat healthily and be physically active. Wandsworth also compares well for new mothers breast feeding their babies, reducing adult obesity and rates of diabetes.
Amanda Philpott, Deputy Chief Executive, NHS Wandsworth said
“It is extremely important for us that we work in association with a range of organisations including the local council, social services, and community and voluntary groups when finding solutions for better healthcare in the borough. We are very pleased with the outcome of the CAA but remain focused on pushing standards in local healthcare by improving access, quality and choice of health care services, particularly for those people in Wandsworth’s most deprived communities.”
“We are delighted that Oneplace recognises the success we’ve achieved together with our local partners in the borough to promote good health in Wandsworth and in particular to address health inequalities.
“Oneplace is a welcome addition to existing healthcare assessments as it brings together information from different sectors to look at the joint goal of improving quality of life for our local people.
Do you agree with this report? What could NHS Wandsworth do to improve local residents health even more?

Wandsworth LINk has received a letter of thanks for the feedback we provided on the ”Your guide to local health services,” from NHS Wandsworth……
Dear LINk members
I would like to take this opportunity to say a big thank you to everyone who gave us such helpful feedback on last year’s “Your guide to local health services.” It is so useful to hear the views of patients and members of the public who received the guide and your comments have helped us understand how we can improve it this year.
We have received some very positive feedback about last year’s guide and some excellent suggestions on how we could make it better. We will be using several of the suggested changes in this year’s guide, including adding more cross referencing in, changing the listings so that some services are easier to find, adding in details of other nearby hospitals, and including symbols for all phone numbers and addresses etc. Unfortunately we cannot use all the suggestions we received as we are limited on the number of pages we can add, but all feedback has been taken into consideration.
Once again, many thanks to everyone who took the time to let us know what you thought. We look forward to hearing what you think of this year’s guide.
If you have any further questions or would like more information on the guide to local health services please contact the NHS Wandsworth communication team on 020 8812 7605 or email them at comms@wpct.nhs.uk
Best wishes
Ally Johnstone

On Thursday 19 November 2009 NHS Wandsworth launched the newly funded Children’s Continuing Care service, which supports families and carers of children with long-term, complex and sometimes life limiting conditions. The launch, which was held at Tooting Leisure Centre, offered patients and healthcare professionals a chance to find out all about the service and meet the Continuing Care team.At the launch, Helen Duffay, Head of Nursing for Children with Disabilities, said:
“I have worked for the NHS in Wandsworth for many years and it is a privilege to manage and develop this new team for the children and their families. The team will develop and change as we receive feedback from parents using the service.
“I’d also like to take this opportunity to say a special thank you to parents for their support, especially with regard to training new staff in their homes.”
The Children’s Continuing Care service provides a team of trained paediatric nurses and healthcare assistants to work with families and carers of children in their own homes. The service is available to support its patients 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
One parent, who now receives respite care for her son seven nights a week, said of the Children’s Continuing Care service:
“They have enabled us to be the parents we want to be. When I speak to other parents who have children with similar needs I realise Wandsworth is the envy of everyone because of the support and care offered here.”
The service, which is based at St John’s Therapy Centre in Battersea, supports children from birth right up until they can transfer to adult care. For more information about the service and how you can be referred contact Madge Chang on 020 8812 7612 or email her at madge.chang@wpct.nhs.uk
