Neurorehabilitation Services in Southwest London Consultation

On 28th November 2011 St George’s Healthcare NHS Trust launched a public consultation on proposals to improve neurorehabilitation services in southwest London.

Their long term plan is to relocate the majority of the service currently provided at the Wolfson to Queen Mary’s where there is already a purpose built facility for rehabilitation services. This will improve accommodation provided to patients. In addition, 10 beds would be provided at St George’s Hospital, Tooting, allowing patients that still have acute needs to begin their neurorehabilitation earlier.

The proposals to merge the services will be discussed at two public meetings during December:

  • 7pm, Tuesday 6th December 2011 at The Wolfson Neurorehabilitation Centre, Copse Hill, Wimbledon, London, SW20 0NQ
  • 7pm, Wednesday 14th December 2011 in the Barnes and Richmond rooms at Queen Mary’s Hospital, Roehampton Lane, Roehampton, London, SW15 5PN

 The full consultation document and feedback form is available at www.stgeorges.nhs.uk/contactconsultation.asp

Equity and Excellence, Liberating the NHS

The Coalition Government launched its first health White Paper on 12 July, setting out its long-term vision for the NHS. Addressing the House of  Commons, Secretary of State for Health, Andrew Lansley, said that the

NHS would remain a comprehensive service that is free at the point of use – but proposed that the service be improved by:

  • Integrating health and social care.
  • Devolving decision making to patients and frontline staff.
  • Extending patient voice, choice and control.
  • Using outcomes to measure performance.

The key reforms being proposed include:

  • Disbanding NHS Primary Care Trusts as buyers of services. All NHS Trusts supplying services to become ‘Foundation Trusts’.
  •  Giving GP consortia the funds and responsibility for commissioning most health services for their patients.
  •  Giving Local Authorities responsibility for public health, and the power to set local objectives.
  • Allowing GPs to buy services from either Foundation Trusts or private service providers.
  • Giving patients choice between providers, consultants and GPs.
  • Making all these changes by 2013/14.
  • LINks to become local HealthWatch to ‘champion the needs of patients and the public at every level of the system’ (Andrew Lansley, Secretary of State for Health)

Public involvement in the new health service

What do you think?

The government proposes:

  • creating an independent consumer body – HealthWatch England;
  •  LINks becoming the local HeathWatch – commissioned by, and accountable to, the Local Authority.
  • The government says that it will increase public voice, choice and control and put patients at the centre of the new health service.
  • They want patients to be able to make informed choices about treatment, services and providers.

They say Local HeathWatch would support voice, choice and control by:

  • continuing to represent patient / carers views and experiences;
  •  Local Authorities commissioning them to provide further advocacy and support services e.g. to help patients rate, complain about or choose between services and providers;
  •  collecting and reporting local experiences for use by the national bodies responsible for research, regulation and inspection.
