Addtional Adhoc meeting reports
Mike Grahn attended a meeting of the Acute Care Forum for Laurel and Rose Wards at Queen Mary Hospital on Monday 7th March.
These are the in-patient wards for people affected by mental health problems and are part of South West London and St George’s Mental Health NHS Trust which is based at Springfield Hospital. The Forum meets once a month and includes representatives of staff and service users with the aim of identifying and implementing improvements in the service. Mike spoke about the LINk research project on Personalisation of care which will be starting later this year. There was considerable support for the project from both staff and service user representatives. The forum is being re-structured in order to make it more effective and is asking for nominations for a service user representative. They are looking for a service user with experience of having been an in-patient at Queen Mary’s in either Rose Ward or Laurel Ward who is interested in helping to improve services and who would be able to attend a meeting at Queen Mary’s once a month. If you have an interest in being considered for this, please contact LINk and we can pass your details to the Forum.
Mike Grahn attended a Meeting of the Community Services Wandsworth Divisional Governance Board on Thursday 10th March on behalf of LINk.
Community Services are now part of St George’s Hospital Trust, having transferred from the Primary Care Trust late last year. For the next two years they will maintain their distinct identity and their own Governance Board whist working closely with their colleagues at St Georges to develop combined services to the highest possible standards.
Positive developments reported at the meeting included the completion of building work at Queen Mary’s Hospital in Roehapton to completely remove mixed-sex accommodation and a prolonged period without any healthcare-associated infections such as MRSA in their patients.
Improved screening procedures that were put in place last year have helped in achieving this. However, the continuing incidence of pressure ulcers (bedsores) in patients was of some concern. It appears that a lack of communication between different groups of care professionals has resulted in patients being left with pressure ulcers that could have been avoided had proper precautions been taken. This was a particular problem for patients moving from community-based care to hospital and then back again. The matter has been given a high priority and will be monitored both by Community Services themselves and by LINk.
